American Civil War Sesquicentennial Tourism Marketing Program

Sesquicentennial Tourism Marketing Program Fact Sheet

The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission and the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) have created a special American Civil War Sesquicentennial Tourism Marketing Program. This program will help Virginia community organizations, working in partnership with the local tourism industry and local sesquicentennial committees, in promoting the observance of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War.

This objective can be accomplished through actions that include the following:

  • Encouraging and stimulating investment by combined efforts of local, regional and statewide entities for Civil War-related cultural marketing initiatives.
  • Marketing Virginia as a year-round travel destination for individuals and groups.
  • Marketing the historical and cultural attractions of Virginia to international travelers.

Proposed events or programs must support and further the Commission's annual conference topic, themes, established programs, or goals, which are outlined below:

Conference topic: America on the Eve of the Civil War
Military theme: Military Technology in the Nineteenth Century
Cultural theme: Life in Virginia’s Counties, Cities and Towns

   2010
Conference topic: Race, Slavery and the Civil War: The Tough Stuff of American History and Memory
Military theme: The Union Responds to Growing Sectional Tensions
Cultural theme: Slavery and Freedmen in Virginia

   2011
Conference topic: American Military Strategy and the Civil War
Military theme: Mobilizing for War: The Opening Moves in the Virginia Theater
Cultural theme: The Road to Secession

   2012
Conference topic: Leadership and Generalship in the Civil War
Military theme: The Valley Campaign and the Rise of the Army of Northern Virginia
Cultural theme: Agriculture, Manufacturing and Commerce in Virginia

   2013
Conference topic: The Home Front in the Civil War
Military theme: The Confederates Counter-Attack, and the Union Turns the Tide
Cultural theme: Communications, Letters and News on the Home Front

   2014
Conference topic: Civil War in a Global Context
Military theme: On to Richmond: The Burden on the Soldiers in the Field
Cultural theme: The Strain of War on the Families and Communities

   2015
Conference: The Memory of the Civil War
Military theme: The Fall of Richmond, Lee's Retreat, and Surrender
Cultural theme: Reunion and Rebuilding on the Home Front

Commission's goals:

Diversity: The commemoration will be inclusive of, and meaningful to, all Virginians, particularly:

  • Diverse racial and ethnic groups;
  • Immigrants and citizens who do not have a hereditary link to the American Civil War; and
  • Young people who do not understand the relevance of the American Civil War to today's population

Inclusiveness: The commemoration will seek to portray a fair and balanced story of Virginia's participation in the American Civil War that includes multiple perspectives: African-American, Union and Confederate; battlefront and home front; political, social and military legacies.

Education: The commemoration period include a strong education component designed to ignite a renewed interest in Virginia's historical heritage. Opportunities will be provided to re-examine the lessons of the past and the legacies of the Civil War to understand how they affect the present and continue to shape our future.

Permanence: The commemoration will imprint Virginia history and leave a positive and rich legacy well beyond 2015.
