The Civil War 150 HistoryMobile and the Legacy Project document digitization program have been recognized with 2013 Leadership in History Awards of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH). The Leadership in History Awards program is the one of the nation's most prestigious competitions for recognition of achievement in state and local history. This is a tremendous honor - deepest thanks are to all who participate in, as well as those who work on, CW150 projects.

Legacy Project archivists visited Historic Sandusky, scanning materials related to the Civil War era. One of the great 'finds' was the diary of a former slave who escaped and joined the Union Navy

Civil War soldiers in Union blue transformed the Stafford County landscape nearly 150 years ago during their yearlong stay--cutting trees and roads and setting up vast camps, a harbor and fortifications.
This week, troops in Army green were at work at a 41-acre site where some of their Civil War counterparts once stayed.
Due largely to those efforts, the area's newest Civil War park could open as early as this fall on the rolling swath of woodland off Mount Hope Church Road.

The knock on Appomattox has long been that there's really nothing here except the McLean House, where Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865—and that's a re-creation put together by the National Park Service in the 1940s.

Two Civil War Trails interpretive markers are unveiled in Abingdon highlighting two people who played important roles in the history of the town: Landon Boyd and Capt. James Wyatt. The markers were funded in part by a grant from the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission and Virginia Tourism Corporation.

March is a busy month for heritage tourism in Lexington and Rockbridge County, Virginia. A CW 150 Legacy Project workshop was held earlier this month for people with Civil War-era diaries, letters, maps and other historic documents. They brought in their items in to be scanned and eventually added to a state archive being compiled by the Library of Virginia. A 2012 Signature Conference, “Leadership and Generalship of the Civil War,” is the next big local event, at Virginia Military Institute on March 22.
